The Butter Lab: A Junior Creamery Experience

10 AM – 12 PM | $50 per seat | Pinehurst

Write us for a discounted $200 for the full 5 day series!

We’re closing out Spring Break with the ultimate kitchen magic: turning liquid cream into solid gold! In this high-energy workshop, our six junior chefs will explore the science of emulsification. We’ll learn how tiny fat molecules in milk hang out together until we shake them into submission, creating rich, creamy butter. Using fermented cream—the chef’s secret for a more sophisticated, slightly tangy flavor—kids will get a workout and a science lesson all in one.

The Experience

  • Dairy Discovery: A light look at where milk comes from, how cream rises to the top, and the science of keeping food safe in the kitchen.

  • Great Shake: Every child gets their own jar to shake, watching the "break" happen right before their eyes as butter separates from the buttermilk.

  • Chef’s Reward: While our hand-crafted butter chills, we’ll sample buttermilk pancakes, tasting exactly why real, cultured dairy makes everything fluffier.

What You’ll Learn

  • Molecular Magic: How agitation (shaking!) forces fat solids to bond together.

  • The Two-for-One: Understanding how cow milk gives us both milk and cream and how we can use these parts safely and deliciously

  • Finishing Touch: How to "wash" and salt butter so it stays fresh and delicious.

What You’ll Take Home

  • Block of Butter: Their own hand-shaped, wrapped portion of the cultured butter they made from scratch.

  • The Pancake Starter: A jar of the fresh buttermilk they separated out from the butter, and a printed recipe for the world’s fluffiest pancakes to make for the family this weekend.
